Why it matters: San Diego's Coastal Resilience Master Plan addresses rising sea levels at 5 key locations: Sunset Cliffs, Ocean Beach, Mission Beach, Tourmaline, and La Jolla Shores. With 2-6 feet of sea level rise expected by 2100 (where 1 foot can shrink beaches by 50+ feet), the time to prepare is NOW.
The City has funds to bring 3 of 5 locations into the design phase and recommends Ocean Beach, Sunset Cliffs, and Mission Beach. We support this approach, especially because the concepts for these beaches prioritize nature-based solutions over beach-killing coastal armoring. Meanwhile, the concepts for Tourmaline and La Jolla Shores must be improved before moving forward.
If you’d like to learn more about the concepts for each beach, check out Surfrider’s recent blog post HERE.
We must preserve our beaches. Please SUPPORT this action at City Council.
